AI Assistants vs AI Agents: What's the Difference?
"AI assistant" and "AI agent" are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don't. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right tool for a task.
Assistants respond; agents pursue
An AI assistant answers questions, drafts text, explains code and helps you think — one exchange at a time. You stay in the driver's seat, guiding each step.
An AI agent takes a goal and pursues it across multiple steps, deciding what to do next and using tools to get there. You set the destination; the agent handles much of the route.
A simple test
Ask yourself: does this task take one step or many?
- "Explain how AI agents work" → an assistant task. One clear answer.
- "Research AI agents, compare three approaches, and produce a summary" → an agent task. Several steps, each building on the last.
They're better together
The best products don't force a choice. BUDDY AI offers a conversational AI assistant for everyday questions and a Super Agent for goal-driven work — in the same workspace. You can ask a quick question, then hand off a larger goal without switching tools.
What to watch for
When evaluating an agent, look for three things:
- Transparency — can you see the plan and the steps it took?
- Control — can you approve high-impact actions and cancel a run?
- Real output — does it produce genuine artifacts, or just describe what it would do?
Assistants and agents are points on a spectrum of autonomy. Match the level of autonomy to the task, and keep oversight where it matters. For multi-step work, an agent saves time; for a quick answer, an assistant is faster and simpler.
